Madhoo's village belle Roja goes from nature-loving free spirit to a reluctant bride in Mani Ratnam's memorable 1992 political drama.

The young girl is plucked from her scenic village in the Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu to live with her cryptologist husband in the capital.

 

In her director mum Aparna Sen's poignant tale of a Tamil Brahmin girl saving a fellow traveller's life during communal unrest, Konkona Sen Sharma plays a traditional young girl Meenakshi Iyer.
Meenakshi, who is travelling with her infant son Santhanam, comes across as a simple-minded housewife but displays immense courage and integrity towards the end of the film.

The film may have been in English but Sharma's performance warrants a special mention.

 

As the streetsmart Simmi in Satish Kaushik's 1993 debacle Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Sridevi displays little traces of a Tamil girl as she flits around with con jobs and disguises.
